1768 a treaty with the Iroquois Indians relinquished their claim to the lands surrounding Pittsburgh and stimulated interest in land grants from the state. In 1786 the first settlers to arrive in this region were the Strawbridge, Rutherford, Roberts, McCully and Beltzhoover families. Land grants sold to the settlers by the state were purchased for as little as 22 cents an acre. The early settlers found this area was ideal for farming, with beautiful streams and numerous springs, plenty of fish and game, and heavily supplied timber.

WELCOME!
This site is designed for Castle Shannon and the South Hills Community.
I'm proud of my community and decided it was time to add more to the history of such a great town.
With so many wonderful people here I am looking to add your story to help preserve the memories for
our future generations.

My Name is Chuck Christ and have been a freelance photographer filming special events for the last decade. With your help we can all work together and give more to the history of the South Hills.
Lately I have made contact with some long time residents and establishments to record their stories of what it was like to grow up here. If you would like to share your story, photos or movie clips;
